Do you drink bottled water? Must read!

If there's just one health tip I could give you that would change your life, this is it: Stop drinking bottled water.

note: make sure you see the solution at the end of this email!

Of course, drinking clean water is super healthy for you and this advice might sound outlandish… but there are several reasons to stop drinking bottled water immediately...

  1. Many bottled waters are just tap water in disguise. Tap water is poisoned with a variety of toxins, including pesticides, pharmaceutical residues, and hormone impersonators. In 2010, the Environmental Working Group reported that tap water from 45 states contained more than 300 contaminants! You'll be shocked at what some of those contaminants were: radon, a radioactive gas; Freon, a refrigerant pumped into air conditioners; the weed killer metolachlor; and acetone, the liquid used to remove nail polish.

  2. Most bottles are made from plastic, which may contain BPA (bisphenol- A) and other plastic chemicals that can act as obesogens that increase the size of fat cells in the body. These chemicals leach from the bottle into the water.

  3. The trash created from plastic water bottles is horrible for our environment. Plastic water bottles create an estimated 1.5 million tons of trash per year and require 47 million gallons of oil to produce!

  4. You'll save so much money! Bottled water is expensive, and depending on how many bottles you buy for yourself and your family every week, the cost adds up quick.

For all these reasons, I filter my own water at home and always carry a stainless steel or glass container of this filtered water around with me – to the gym, in the car, to meetings, and even to some restaurants!

Once you start drinking your delicious filtered water from home, you'll never want to drink anything else. You will start to taste the chlorine and other impurities from other water sources. The only time I get bottled water is when I'm in a foreign country or traveling somewhere where I don't have access to filtered water in a glass bottle. Drinking toxin-free water makes a major difference in the way I feel and I consider it a vital part of my everyday life.

I installed a whole-house filter in my house so no matter which faucet I'm using, I'm sure to get clean, filtered water. I personally love the fact that I can brush my teeth, grab a glass of water from the tap in my bathroom, and give my newborn a bath in clean water.

I can't believe this drink. So shameful!

When I first saw the new Starbucks Unicorn Frappuccino I just knew that kids everywhere were going to be drinking it – I mean what kid isn't going to want a drink that looks like this! But of course…the first thing that popped into my mind was what the heck is it made out of? Well, we found out, and it's APPALLING.

The most shocking aspect of this drink actually isn't the ingredient list – it's the sugar. The Unicorn Frappuccino grande has 59 grams of sugar and a shocking 76 grams in a venti size. That's more than an ENTIRE BAG of Hostess Powdered Donettes - which is 20 donettes and more than I hope anyone would dream of eating in one sitting!

It's totally outrageous that Starbucks is promoting this drink at all, and especially to children. This was part of their "secret menu" and apparently they're only making it for a few days as a promotion. Yet - this isn't the only drink at Starbucks filled with questionable chemicals and an outrageous amount of sugar. Some of the drinks on their regular menu are even WORSE...

  • Grande Caramel Cocoa Cluster Frappuccino - 68 grams sugar (85 grams in venti!)

  • Grande Iced White Chocolate Mocha - 49 grams sugar

  • Venti Vanilla Crème (Kid's drink menu) - 48 grams sugar

  • Grande Hot Cocoa - 43 grams sugar

  • Grande Caramel Frappuccino - 66 grams sugar

  • Grande Java Chip Frappuccino - 66 grams sugar

The Unicorn Frappuccino has gotten a ton of media attention - and a lot of it hasn't been positive. Starbucks is finally getting called out for the insane amount of sugar they put in their drinks! I hope that this will open more people's eyes to what they are really getting when they order a drink at Starbucks and how drinks like these can negatively affect your health.

Dips and Chips... what not to buy!

This time of year we love to get together and spend more time outside at parties and BBQ's with friends and family. If we're heading out, of course it's customary to bring a dish and so I always do (and often bring several). This way I know that I'll have something healthy to eat and can also share with my loved ones how delicious healthy eating can be! 

Although it can be tempting to just pick up some packaged foods like chips, dip, and pasta salads at the store, I don't want to go down the road of buying processed foods full of health-wrecking additives. Instead, I choose to make recipes like this new one on the blog today!
 
I just posted a fun recipe for Slow Cooker Southwest Bean Dip with Homemade Chips that is going to be put to big use this year for sure! You can always double or triple the recipe – it's a crowd pleaser. This recipe is so super simple to make, you just basically throw the ingredients in your slow cooker and when you come back in a couple hours it's practically ready to go.
 
A lot of people just pull out their slow cookers in the winter, but I think they're perfect during hot weather so you don't heat up your house. If you are trying to eat more home cooked meals but are limited on time, using a slow cooker makes it virtually effortless. This recipe comes from my Real Food Slow Cooker Guide, which has over 50 slow cooker recipes that are all incredibly delicious and easy. Safe deodorant (designed for athletes - perfect for Summer!)

When I made the switch to organic living years ago, my (mostly toxic) personal care products were the last thing to go. Once I figured out what toxic industrial chemicals in food were doing to my body – I knew I had to get rid of them from every part of my life. I think this progression is how most people detox their lives. First I cleaned out my fridge and pantry, then I figured out a natural way to clean my house, and then I went on to look at what I was putting on my skin and body.

As soon as I flipped my "Secret" antiperspirant over to read the ingredients I noticed it contained "Aluminum Zirconium." Although hotly debated… this ingredient is linked to all sorts of diseases, including two that I sadly have witnessed in close friends and family members – Breast Cancer and Alzheimer's Disease. Putting this on my underarms every day, right where some of my lymph nodes are (glands that play a huge role in the immune system) suddenly seemed like a horrible idea!

That really dry feeling you get when you use antiperspirants like Mitchum, Suave, Secret, Gillette, Right Guard, and Soft & Dri is caused by the aluminum, which squeezes the sweat ducts shut so you can't sweat… and I don't know about you, but I find this really unnatural and unhealthy. Sweating actually has a lot of benefits – clears skin, lowers body temperature and fights off sickness – so why would I want to prevent my body doing what it needs to do to stay healthy?

So this is the ingredient that caused me to throw out my toxic antiperspirant and should hopefully get you to also (if you haven't already) run out and buy natural deodorant without Aluminum.

That being said, you can't exactly just pop into an everyday drugstore and always find a safe brand without aluminum and other harmful chemicals that actually works good. Finding a safe deodorant that I like to use has been a struggle... I've tried SO MANY brands over the years - and if you use natural deodorant too, you can probably relate!

New label will keep you from getting poisoned.

When the story broke that popular foods like Cheerios and Stacy's Pita Chips contain glyphosate weedkiller – we were outraged. If you missed this news, Food Democracy Now! and The Detox Project commissioned scientific testing which found glyphosate in many popular American foods… even some that are organic and non-GMO! My reporting on this was my most shared post of 2016, with millions of views. It struck a chord with so many of you, and for good reason…

Glyphosate isn't safe to eat as it's been linked to cancer, reproductive problems, liver, kidney and skin cell damage, antibiotic-resistance, and more. No matter how healthy we eat or how much we try to protect ourselves from it, this weedkiller is being used on most major conventional food crops – such as wheat, tomatoes, sugar, nuts, oranges, apples, beans, and corn – and winding up in practically everything Americans eat...  honey, cereals, meat, drinking water, breast milk, infant formula, chips, cookies… the list goes on!

I've received thousands of comments and emails from those of you who want to know how to avoid glyphosate and know if the food we buy at the store contains it. I'm right there with ya, I want to know too!!! Right now, the only way to find out if the food you are buying contains glyphosate is to literally send it to a lab and get it tested. It's ridiculous.

We need to ask food companies get their products tested and verified. We need to educate our favorite food brands as to why this label is important and why they'd want to make sure that their products don't contain glyphosate.

Recently a friend showed me the annual ranking by U.S. News and World Report of what they consider the "Best Diets" in America. Taking a quick glance at their rankings, I knew that something wasn't right.

Don't worry, I got you! (expires on Friday.)

I've been pouring through hundreds of your responses to Monday's email over the last couple days and wish I could respond to each of you individually! I love how you opened yourself up and let me know who you are. I can't thank you enough for taking the time to write back and for being so candid. You are helping me plan out future investigations and petitions, so that we can make the biggest impact - on not just the food industry, but our own lives. I now have a long list of projects to work on that I can't wait to share with you!

What really made my day was seeing how many of you are already really happy with the way you're eating with lots of healthy, unprocessed, organic foods… this warmed my organic-food-loving heart!!! You guys are so inspiring and rockin' it!

Not everyone is there yet though - and that's okay. In this email I'm going to share with you what's working for these people who are already thriving and happy with their diets, because you can do what they are doing too! I'll tell you specifically what sets them apart from everyone else out there who feels bloated, addicted to sugar, overweight, and tired all the time.

I noticed a common theme amongst everyone who is happy with their diets and they all had these TWO THINGS in common...

Just between you and me....

Good morning! First of all - Thank you for reading this blog and sharing our investigations and recipes - I consider you part of my team and we are changing the world!! You are so special to me and I want to make sure I'm always doing everything I can to help you achieve your goals when it comes to your food and your health.

That's why I developed a little challenge for us to do today… it's not really hard (I promise!) but will help me, help you!  

When it comes to what you choose to eat every day (i.e. your "diet"), I know many of you feel like you aren't where you want to be and that it could use some improvements. So today we are going to get to the WHY… If you are struggling with your diet, we need to know why before we can tackle the HOW.

Do this TODAY within the next 24 hours...

  1. Spend just the next 5 minutes with yourself and ponder the 4 questions below.
  2. Respond to the questions by simply replying to this email. You can remain anonymous if you want to! I just want to hear from ALL of you! So don't be shy.

Are you ready??? Make sure you take this challenge within the next 24 hours so we can move on to the next step together.

Question #1Are you happy with your current diet? Let me know if you already feel satisfied with the way you are eating, and if not, why! For instance, you might say...

"I feel bloated and sluggish and know it must be something I'm eating. So I'm really not happy with the way I'm eating and need to make some changes. I also feel addicted to soda even though I know it is horrible for me, but don't know how to stop!" 

Question #2: What are your goals when it comes to your diet? Describe what would make you the happiest if you got your eating habits under control. Tell me how it would make you feel, not just how you'd like to look. Be detailed! For example, your response might be something like this…

"I'd be able to fit into my favorite pair of shorts again. I want to wear them on an upcoming vacation and like how confident I feel in them. It would also give me the energy to play with my kids at the park. This gives me so much joy and they are only young once! I'd love to set a good example for my spouse and kids - I want them to live a long healthy life too!"

Question #3: Do you have specific challenges and obstacles that stop you from eating the way you want to? What are they? Be as specific as possible, for example...

"My biggest obstacle is a lack of time! I feel like the majority of my time is spent either thinking about what I'm going to eat, buying food, and preparing food. My family is addicted to easy processed food and sometimes I find it really hard to resist what they are eating. I really need to figure out how to get organized and become more efficient with my time."

Question #4: Based on your past experiences, what happens when you try to change your diet? What did you change? Why didn't you stick with it? For example...

"I have a problem following through. I jump into a new "diet" and then lose steam, interest, focus, energy… life takes over and next thing you know I'm heading to the nearest drive-thru! Last time I tried to stop eating GMOs I got so confused at the grocery store and didn't know how to make the right choices. I feel frustrated and just give up."
