My favorite sunscreens at 20% off :)

It's almost summer, can you believe it? I love this time of year and spending time at the beach! However, I struggled for years to find a sunscreen that didn't make me break out in a rash and that wasn't full of chemicals quietly harming my health. The skin is one of the most under-appreciated organs, and one that I used to totally take for granted, slathering products full of toxic chemicals on it day after day.

If you're worried about the chemicals in your food, the skincare and cosmetics industry is even worse. When it comes to the things we put on our skin - like sunscreen - you've really got to be your own advocate. Here in the United States, the FDA does not regulate skincare products as rigorously as pharmaceuticals or food – allowing companies to get away with using all types of potentially harmful ingredients that are not used and in some cases are banned in other countries. Sound familiar?

The popular sunscreen brands like Banana Boat, Coppertone, Bull Frog, Neutrogena, store brands (CVS, Rite Aid, Walgreens), Hawaiian Tropic, and especially sunscreen sprays are rated the worst in terms of safety by the respected Environmental Working Group (EWG) because their products contain some crazy chemicals that can be absorbed into your bloodstream and cause issues with your health.

I've tried A LOT of different sunscreens over the years, looking for the safest brands that actually work, and found a couple brands that I really love (and both rated "1" in terms of excellent safety by EWG). Do you eat ice cream?

I absolutely LOVE ice cream. When I want a treat, ice cream is one of my favorites! But take a walk through the typical ice cream aisle and you'll find a minefield of risky (and sometimes dangerous) additives mixed with factory farmed milk. I'm a firm believer that everyone should still enjoy treats from time to time, but don't consider it a treat to poison myself with heart-wrecking trans fats, carcinogenic poisons like glyphosate, and additives linked to gut inflammation. I've learned that you can enjoy treats (even ice cream!) that won't destroy your health and pack on the pounds, but you just need to know what to look for.

The musical fruit that can help you lose weight!

Beans are one of the healthiest foods you can eat… and they're wildly inexpensive. And, eating them can help you live longer! Researchers who study the "Blue Zones", which are parts of the world where people live extraordinarily long and healthy lives, have found that beans are an integral part of the diets of those who live in these zones.

  • Beans are an amazing source of protein and soluble fiber – so they keep you feeling full for hours and can help you lose weight

  • They are full of nutrients that fight heart disease

  • There's ample evidence that beans reduce the risk of cancer

If you want to live a long and healthy life, it's time to add more beans to your diet stat! A great way to add more of them is to cut back on the amount of organic meat used in a recipe by substituting half (or more) with organic beans. Also consider having a few meatless dinners each week if you aren't already. Here are some of my favorite bean recipes for you to try:

When it comes to buying beans, I typically buy dried organic beans (which are often found super cheap in the bulk section!) When you cook them yourself, you can avoid BPA and save money too. If you do buy canned to save time, remember to choose brands that are labeled as BPA-free.

Detoxing? You need this.

When I first started researching my food I didn't want to believe the facts I read. I wanted to close my eyes, cover my ears, and sing lalalalalalala. And I was angry…

I never gave permission for my body to be used as a toxic waste dump or science experiment. Everything I had been putting in my body was either made from something out of a chemical factory, sprayed with chemicals, or genetically modified to make companies richer and me sicker.

Our bodies are working overtime every day to process all of the substances that come in and to expel toxins – but they are being pushed to the brink with the food system we have today. When our organs are overtaxed and overburdened with toxins, symptoms can creep up such as fatigue, digestion problems, bloating, weight gain and muscle aches. When these symptoms go unchecked, we are at risk for greater health problems down the road.

How do you break free from all these toxins? Detoxification starts in the diet. Certain foods support the natural detoxification processes in the body, such as lemons, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables. All of us can naturally keep our body's detox system running optimally at very little cost or effort!
