The most insidious ingredient in the food supply!

I got a TON of responses to yesterday's email. I am happy to report that almost all of you got it right!

That HORRIBLE ingredient I was talking about yesterday is REFINED PROCESSED SUGAR.

I'm human, just like you, and I love sweets! For most of my life, I was addicted to sugar. As a result, my health suffered a lot too. My teeth were awful, my skin was a mess, my body was inflamed, my energy was low and I was overweight.

My diet was filled with the usual suspects… wheat bread, pastas, cookies, sweet fruity yogurts and frozen diet meals - which were all filled with refined sugars like corn syrup, dextrose, and plain old refined white sugar.

Is this something that you struggle with too?

I read your comments and emails to me every day and listen to the problems you're having trying to break away from the processed food industry.

The NUMBER ONE issue you've expressed to me is your struggle to tame cravings and avoid SUGAR. This is so common, even when we know better!

Everyone knows it's healthier to eat vegetables than a box of cookies, but it's pretty much impossible to stick to eating healthy whole foods all of the time. We all rely on restaurant food and some packaged processed foods - especially, when we are traveling, at the office or are super busy - it's inevitable!

So, even if you are eating an organic diet, you could still be sabotaged by sugar every day if you're not careful about the foods you choose. That's because even foods that you think have zero sugar added to them (like salad dressings or a can of vegetable soup) can be loaded up with added refined sugars.

Study after study is coming out that shows how toxic sugar is to the body and how it leads to a myriad of diseases - heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's, liver disease, and more.

It has become clearer than ever that sugar is an enemy that prevents us from achieving optimal health and the fit bodies we want. If you care seriously about your health, it's time to put on the brakes and focus on how much sugar you are really eating.

Spend some time this weekend and monitor your sugar intake. When you do, I think you'll be surprised! I know I was - and this little exercise changed my habits right away!

I was shocked at how much sugar is hidden in everyday foods. I honestly couldn't believe it and it freaked me out considering how carefully I choose my foods.

That's why I worked with my team to develop a program to help all of us deal with the insane amount of sugar that invades our diets at every turn.

On Monday, I'm reopening the Food Babe 7- Day Sugar Detox for a limited time with a very special offer!

Watch for your email on Monday for all the details!

This is a program that has helped hundreds of people take control of all of the sugar in their lives. They've achieved major health milestones and dropped some serious pounds! I'll be sharing some of their powerful stories with you next week too.

If your friends and families are struggling with sugar too (I mean, who isn't?!?) please share this email with them and ask them to subscribe to this newsletter here. This program is really fun when you team up with a partner and change your lives together!

Stay tuned for details next week!

This SICKENING ingredient is added to 80% of processed food!

This single ingredient is one of the most tricky and addictive ones out there, and I'm sure that you've 100% eaten it. And probably often!

It is so harmful to your health that chronic consumption is linked to almost every major health problem there is… type 2 diabetes... inflammation...high blood pressure... poor sex drive... cancer... depression. The list goes on and on.

It also adds pounds to your waistline and helps you age faster.

I know it sounds like one ingredient couldn't cause this much destruction - but it does.

The good news is that once you eliminate it from your diet, your health soars. You have more energy and your skin glows. Your risk of chronic disease decreases greatly. Getting rid of this ingredient could literally save your life!

Do you know what ingredient I'm talking about?

If you're not sure yet, here is a bigger clue…

The processed food industry has made it almost impossible to avoid this ingredient because they know it's addicting and they want to keep you hooked! That's why they've stuffed it into nearly 80% of processed foods.

It's no wonder that the average American consumes about THREE POUNDS of this ingredient every single week in their regular diet.

Now can you guess what this ingredient is?

If you've been a subscriber to my newsletter for awhile now, I'm pretty sure you'll get this one right - but I'd LOVE to know what you think!

Just hit "reply" on this email and tell me what ingredient you think I'm talking about.

Tomorrow, I'll let you know the answer. I'll also tell you how to get this insidious ingredient out of your diet and on track with your health!

I can't wait to receive your response!

Till tomorrow…

P.S. I've been posting a lot of fun information on Instagram lately. Make sure you follow my two accounts - thefoodbabe and foodbabemama (just for those who want to follow along my pregnancy journey - I heard the heartbeat this week!!!)

Food Freezing Tips: How Long Can You Store Meals in Your Freezer? [Infographic]

Posted: 27 Jul 2016 01:08 PM PDT

Food preservation in cold temperatures has been practiced since the early days of mankind, although not as effortlessly as today when we have powerful freezers, polythene bags and plastic containers, freezer labels and other utensils that help us better preserve food. We also have the knowledge of how to do it properly.

To make sure defrosted food is as fresh, nutritious and tasty as before freezing it, there are certain rules to follow. For example:
  • Food should always be frozen at the peak of its ripeness/freshness;
  • Some types of food do not freeze well, such as eggs in shell or potatoes;
  • Liquids expand in cold temps, so it's important to leave enough room in the container when freezing beverages, etc.
Most importantly, we must know how long we can keep each type of food in the freezer before it loses its taste or even becomes unsafe to eat (if air gets in).

The following infographic is created as a guide to help you figure out how long you can keep meat, seafood, ice cream and other food products in the freezer. Keep it on your fridge or freezer for quick reference when planning meals.

I want to give you a jar of my favorite coconut oil!

I want to thank you so much for all the congratulations and well wishes on my pregnancy - little baby Food Babe feels so loved by you already! I had no idea my announcement would garner such a response, your blessings really mean the world to me!!! This is a really exciting time for us, and we love and appreciate you SO MUCH.

Now that you know I'm expecting, I can start sharing all the little new things I am doing. It has recently become a nightly ritual for me to rub coconut oil on my growing tummy at night before bed as it really moisturizes and nourishes my skin as it expands to make room for baby. Even if you aren't pregnant, coconut oil makes a fantastic natural moisturizer and that's why I like to keep a jar in my bathroom just for that purpose. I also cook with coconut oil all the time, so this is one staple that I always keep well stocked in my house.

Just some of the reasons why I personally use and love Nutiva's coconut oil:

  • It is certified organic. This means no synthetic pesticides or GMOs were used in its production and it is free of harmful additives.
  • It isn't bleached and chemically processed like some of the coconut oils on the market.
  • Coconut oil is full of healthy fats, including lauric acid, a medium-chain triglyceride. This healthy fat may be beneficial to weight loss, can help lower cholesterol, and provides the body with a direct source of energy.
  • Nutiva supports a sustainable food system and has ethical practices. Nutiva sources its product from small farms in the Philippines, and ensures all suppliers and workers are fairly compensated.
  • It works great for medium heat cooking, baking, and sauteing, as well as a natural moisturizer, hair conditioner, and makeup remover.

Because I want you to be able to try this amazing product, my partners Thrive Market has agreed to give you a free jar of Nutiva's Coconut Oil (while supplies last + $1.95 for shipping) when you join their site!

Thrive Market won't send you just a tiny sample jar either - you'll get a full size 15 oz. jar of Nutiva's Coconut Oil! They have also generously agreed to give you a 15% discount on your first Thrive Market order.

To claim your free jar of Nutiva's Coconut Oil + 15% off your first order, visit Thrive Market here to join.

Now, let me tell you how Thrive Market works and why I have partnered with them.

I've heard how frustrated many of you are that your local stores don't carry the brands that I've recommended in my investigations and that your organic food options are extremely limited (if you're lucky enough to have any at all). In a typical grocery store you'll always find Doritos, Coca-Cola, and Pizza Rolls, but where's the real food? It's maddening.

That's why Thrive Market can be an excellent resource for you to buy organic products that aren't available to you locally, and at a discount!

Their website is like a health food store stocked up with non-GMO and organic groceries at drastically reduced prices (up to 25-50% off). I've found that the quality of their products are always as good as what I can buy locally and they carry most of the brands that I love, support, and recommend in my investigations.

When you claim your jar of coconut oil on Thrive Market, you'll start a free 30-day membership trial - which you can cancel at anytime. If you decide to keep your membership after the 30 days, the fee is just $59.95 per year (which works out to about $5 a month).

When it comes to buying organic food, Thrive Market has really become a lifesaver for me.

I hope it helps you buy all of the organic goodies that you need to stock up your kitchen with the healthiest foods at a reasonable price! If any of your friends or family live far away from natural food stores, complain about organic food prices, or just need to save time and money, please share this email with them.

Join Thrive Market here to claim your free jar of Nutiva's Coconut Oil + Get 15% off your first purchase.

P.S. If you are already a member of Thrive Market, you can still get a jar too! They will send you a jar of Nutiva Coconut Oil (while supplies last) along with your purchase of $50 or more in groceries next time you shop. Just follow this link to log-in to your Thrive Market account.

10 Vegan Recipes Worthy of a Cookout

Posted: 19 Jul 2016 09:53 AM PDT

For the non-animal product eating, summer cookouts can occasionally feel, how shall we say, limiting: ribs! Burgers! Cheeseburgers! Ice cream! Potato salad swimming in mayonnaise! This — despite an otherwise excellent selection of picnic sides — can be a little discouraging. But! Cookouts need not be so — and vegan folks need not just linger by the spread of side dishes hoping for an ear of corn or a frozen veggie burger, either.

Here are 10 delicious vegan recipes from Food 52's Gena Hamshaw worthy of a summer afternoon barbecue:

Creamy Vegan Avocado Potato Salad

Tempeh Kebabs with Homemade BBQ Sauce

Sweet, tangy homemade barbecue sauce is a perfect complement to the nutty, earthy taste of tempeh.

Grilled Avocado Halves with Cumin-Spiced Quinoa and Black Bean Salad

Creamy, satisfying avocado meets a hassle-free, versatile quinoa salad that works on its own as an anytime summer side dish.

Black Bean and Corn Burgers

These veggie burgers are a little bit spicy, thanks to a mixture of paprika, cumin, and chili, and a little bit sweet, thanks to fresh summer corn.

Penne with Sweet Summer Vegetables, Pine Nuts, and Herbs

Think of this recipe as summer in a bowl. The sweet corn, bursting cherry tomatoes, and tender zucchini lighten up a savory, satisfying bowl of pasta.

Vegan Sweet Potato Biscuits

A sweet or savory spin on biscuits that feature sweet potato for a tender, moist interior and a very pretty golden color.

Vegan Summer Succotash

The combination of sweet vegetables and buttery coconut oil makes this easy dinner an irresistible delight.

 Perfect Vegan Pie Crust

This pie crust is totally authentic and yet totally dairy free -- all thanks to the magic of coconut oil.

Strawberry Vanilla Coconut Ice Cream

This rich, dreamy ice cream -- which no one would ever guess is vegan -- benefits from fresh ingredients: seasonal, freshly picked strawberries and fresh vanilla bean.

No-Fuss Vegan Cornbread

This cornbread is a perfect balance of savory and sweet, rich and light.

It is Time to Fight Back!

I know you are upset. I am too.

The Senate voted 63-30 on July 7th, 2016 in favor of a sham GMO labeling bill that stops Vermont's GMO labeling laws and allows companies to use QR codes instead of words on the package. It discriminates against low-income families, minorities, mothers, seniors, the disabled & those without smartphones. The bill is now moving onto the House, and at this point, it appears very likely that it will pass sometime this week, probably today.

It is clear that our corrupt government leaders in Washington have sold out to the Big Food and chemical companies.

Here's your 4 step action plan to fight back!

We have the power and this corrupt bill will completely backfire on them - just watch. All we need to do is follow these 4 simple steps and I bet you are already following one of them! But you need to act today.

This is critical. Please share this action plan with everyone you know, you can simply just forward this email or share this post on social media.

P.S. Also new on the blog - I know your market is overflowing right now with this GMO crop. But, thankfully there is a way to buy a non-GMO version. I share 3 new recipes using this yummy summertime vegetable. The coconut chips are out of this world! Check it all out here. Happy organic eating!

Your long weekend GOOD FOOD menu is here!

In preparation for all the July 4th celebrations happening this weekend, I wanted to make sure you saw this brand new recipe.

It's perfect, easy and fast to make and guaranteed to be a hit with all of your friends and family. The side dish pairs perfectly with a meal by the pool or backyard BBQ. Best of all? It doesn't contain any of that nasty cottonseed oil found in most store-bought versions!

And if you are celebrating and need more recipe ideas – check out some of my summer favorites to enjoy with a crowd here:

  • Kale Slaw – Pairs nicely with anything from the grill.

Stay safe this weekend!

P.S. Please keep calling your Senators and ask them to vote NO on the GMO labeling bill – I hear the vote is coming up very soon! It's really easy to call – just look up your Senators here, and they will connect you to their office. Leave a message with the clerk if they are not there. It takes less than 3 mins and can really make a difference! And remember to call BOTH of your Senators!
