When I was a kid, I was the QUEEN of candy!

Don’t put on lipstick until you read this

I don’t wear a lot of makeup in my daily life. But since I’m on camera a lot, I do use mascara, eyeliner, eye shadow, blush, and a little lip color.

When I do wear it, it has to be the cleanest I can find.

• Forever chemicals. In a test of 231 makeup products, 82% of waterproof mascaras and 62% of long-lasting lipsticks showed high levels of a marker for PFAS, linked to hormone disruption and certain cancers. 28 of 29 products tested further didn’t list PFAS on the label.
• Parabens, siloxanes, and triclosan. Linked to hormone disruption.
• Heavy metals. Lead turned up in all 400 lipsticks in one federal test.
• Fragrance and talc. “Fragrance” can hide dozens of undisclosed chemicals. Talc can carry asbestos.
• Plastic glitter. Tiny flecks of plastic, and microplastics have already turned up in human blood.

What’s touching your skin all night?

My kids spend about 10 hours a night in their pajamas. Nothing else touches their skin for that long.

So I'm picky about what they sleep in.

Most kids' pajamas are made from polyester or conventional cotton.

Conventional cotton is grown with synthetic pesticides.

Then the fabric gets colored with synthetic dyes and finished with chemical treatments. That includes formaldehyde resins that keep it from wrinkling and shrinking.

None of that has to be on the tag.

Kids also have more skin surface relative to their body weight than adults do. Whatever is on the fabric, they get more of it for their size.

Organic cotton skips the synthetic pesticides. GOTS certification goes further. It covers every step from the field to the factory and bans formaldehyde finishes, heavy metals, and dyes that release chemicals linked to cancer.

3 things I look for when I buy anything cotton:

• The GOTS logo, not just the word "organic." A GOTS "organic" label means at least 95% certified organic fiber. "Made with organic" can mean as little as 70%.
• No "wrinkle-free," "no-iron," or "easy care" on the label. Those usually mean a chemical finish.
• Wash it before the first wear. Washing often lowers formaldehyde levels. It doesn't always get it all out.

That's why my kids sleep in organic cotton.

And they love it when we all match. When the whole family is in the same pajamas, my house turns into a party. 

When they match, they play together instead of fighting. It builds a sibling bond I love watching.

Don’t be duped by these food labels

The other day I was walking through the grocery store and saw these fruit snacks that said they were “MADE WITH REAL FRUIT.”

I picked up the box, flipped it over, and saw the first ingredient was corn syrup. The second was sugar.

Then came modified corn starch, artificial flavors, and artificial food dyes.

Are you kidding me?

I put those suckers right back on the shelf. If I want to give my kids fruit, I’ll give them some strawberries or a banana!

Then I saw some “SUGAR FREE” pudding.

I went to check the ingredients and instead of sugar, it was chock full of ingredients like artificial flavors and artificial sweeteners like aspartame.

Aspartame and other artificial sweeteners have been linked to cancer in some studies.

No thank you. I’ll take real food over that any day.

And then I saw some “ALL NATURAL” pretzels that looked like they might be good for the kids.

I turned those over and found bleached enriched flour, soybean oil, and high-oleic soybean oil.

Most soy is grown from GMO seeds doused in pesticides and bleached flour has been processed to death in a factory. How exactly is that “all natural”?
