Growing up, summer cookouts meant white hamburger buns from the grocery store, Heinz ketchup, and a big bowl of Doritos on the picnic table. Nobody thought twice about any of it.
But now all I see is… what's actually in all of it. And what we're really putting in our bodies.
Here are 3 things worth looking at before your cookouts this summer:
- The most overlooked source of toxins at your summer cookout is the bun
Flip over a standard hamburger or hot dog bun and read what's actually in it. Enriched flour. Soybean oil. High fructose corn syrup. Monoglycerides.
It's the same chemical soup you'd find in any processed grocery store bread. And if the wheat is conventional (it almost always is), it's been sprayed with glyphosate (Roundup weedkiller) right before harvest.
You might have the meat part figured out: organic and grass-fed. And then you put it on a bun full of chemicals.
This is why we've been getting ours from Organic Bread of Heaven. 100% certified organic. No glyphosate, no dough conditioners, no additives that need a chemistry degree to pronounce. Their burger buns, hot dog buns, and slider buns are made with real ingredients, shipped to your door, and go straight into the freezer until you need them.

- Most condiments are a seed oil and sugar delivery system.
Pretty much every condiment you’d put on a burger or a hot dog starts with GMO soybean or canola oil.
Even the ones that say they're "made with olive oil" often contain these seed oils too!
Industrial seed oils have nothing to do with real food.
Primal Kitchen is what's on our table now. Their mayo is filled with avocado oil, not soybean oil. Their ketchup comes unsweetened, without HFCS. The BBQ sauce and mustard are the same: clean ingredients, short lists, nothing hiding.
And honestly, I think they taste better.

- Most chips are made from GMO corn sprayed with chemicals and fried in seed oils
Conventional tortilla chips, even the ones in the colorful "artisan" bags, are almost always made from GMO corn sprayed heavily with pesticides, and fried in canola or sunflower oil.
Tatemada is what we put out now, and I'm not going back.
They're oven-baked with no added oils at all. Made from certified organic heirloom corn using traditional nixtamalization, an ancient method that actually increases the nutrition and digestibility of the corn.
The only ingredients you’ll find in these chips are organic heirloom corn, lime, Himalayan salt. Three ingredients. Nothing else.
The founder was actually at The People vs. Poison rally in D.C. last week...this is a brand that gets it and I love to support them.

P.S. If you're firing up the grill this weekend, the easiest thing you can do right now is swap the bun. Organic Bread of Heaven ships fast. Use code FOODBABE for 10% off and grab enough to stock the freezer.
