I am pretty lucky that I get to work with people that are just as passionate as I am about changing the food system - but I am constantly saddened by the reasons that drive this passion.

For example, one of my colleagues shared a story with me about her father fighting cancer recently. His doctor recommended Ensure shakes for him to drink. When he eventually lost his battle, his diet consisted almost entirely of these...

Those shakes are chock full of industrial man-made chemicals that have no business being marketed to ill people trying get well. They're like a greatest hits of ingredients to avoid… with tons of sugar, GMOs, carrageenan and cellulose (which can disrupt our gut bacteria and cause inflammation). FDA banned Red#3 in cosmetics because it caused cancer in animal studies, but still allows it in food - and food that is recommended to cancer patients! It's maddening, but it gets worse... 

Ensure also contains "artificial flavors" - An ingredient to avoid at all costs, especially now...

The FDA recently banned 7 artificial flavor ingredients (as a result of a major lawsuit) because they caused cancer in lab animals. These ingredients all fall under the term "artificial flavors" on the ingredient list - so ANY product that lists artificial flavors as an ingredient may contain them, but food companies are not required to tell you if they do.

The FDA has given food companies TWO YEARS to remove the banned ingredients from their flavors. In the meantime, they're still on store shelves. Up until October 9, 2020 this is perfectly legal!

This is what's wrong with our food system. Food companies are allowed to continue selling you products with ingredients known to cause cancer in animal studies – without any warning. It's so outrageous.

You can't trust food companies or government agencies to care about our health. After all, they only remove dangerous and unhealthy ingredients when they are forced to do so - which can take decades.
